ALBUM NOTES
Cantilena is an album that showcases the alto saxophone in a variety of settings, including woodwind trio, concerto/concertino, and a single unaccompanied work. Three of the works, performed with Triforia Winds (Jocelyn Goranson, flute and Mary Alice Druhan, clarinet), display the timbral and expressive possibilities of the underutilized combination of flute, clarinet, and alto saxophone. Koechlins hauntingly beautiful Epitaphe de Jean Harlow features alto saxophone with flute (Jocelyn Goranson) and piano (Patrice Ewoldt), while the works by Whitney and Smith are well-established works for saxophone and wind band (performed with the Messiah College Wind Ensemble, conducted by Bradley Genevro and William Stowman). Ted Hansens solo saxophone composition, Cantilena, was written for and premiered by Todd, and he considers it a great privilege to present this first recording of the work. The album is named after this work in tribute to Dr. Hansens friendship and his lasting legacy.
