ALBUM NOTES
The University of South Carolina Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band at the University of South Carolina. Formerly known as the Symphonic Band, the ensemble is now under the direction of Scott Weiss. Passionately committed to new music, in recent years the ensemble has commissioned works by numerous composers, including Jennifer Higdon, Joseph Schwantner, David Dzubay, Frank Ticheli, Joseph Turrin, Kevin Walczyk, Steven Bryant, and John Mackey. In addition to its regular concert season in the Koger Center for the Performing Arts, recent activities of the ensemble include an historic Concert Tour of the People’s Republic of China in March 2012. The tour consisted of 7 performances in the premier concert halls in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Zhuji, and Huzhou; the ensemble’s sold-out performance at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing was broadcast live on Chinese national television. Other recent activities include a featured performance at the 2012 South Carolina Music Educators Association Conference and an East Coast Concert Tour in 2011. In February 2013 the ensemble had its first professional CD released on the Naxos label featuring the music of Leonard Bernstein. In addition to the ensemble’s performance at the 2013 CBDNA National Conference, the USC Wind Ensemble has also accepted an invitation to perform at the 2014 American Bandmasters Association Convention in Montgomery, Alabama.
